Program Description

The course is designed to assist the student in understanding the basic needs of animals, from the information provided obtain a better understanding of the animal profile and then be able to identify problems. Students will then be able to comfortably understand animal breeds and at an early stage pass on any problems or information to vets or owners.

The course is not designed as a veterinary assistants course, but rather as a possible introduction to the field of animal care and hopefully in the future encourage you to consider a career in animal management.

Course Syllabus

  1. Cats.
    1. Discuss how important the breed of cat is as a selection criterion.
    2. Describe what impact improper feeding can have on a cat's health.
    3. Define whether it is possible to train a cat.
  2. Dogs.
    1. Evaluate the dangers of inadequate feeding and overfeeding.
    2. Investigate canine nutrition.
    3. Discuss exercise.
    4. Define grooming.
    5. Analyse how a disease/illness is identified.
  3. Horses.
    1. Discuss points you should consider when buying a horse.
    2. Define conformation.
    3. Describe the ideal stable.
    4. List for what purposes you would use a dandy brush.
    5. List for what purposes you would use a body brush.
    6. Identify the symptoms of Colic.
  4. Birds.
    1. Describe the varieties of housing available to the bird keeper.
    2. Explain how to handle a bird correctly.
    3. Identify what clues you would look for if a bird seemed unwell.
    4. Discuss how you would identify and treat constipation.
  5. Rabbits.
    1. Analyse the factors that one might need to consider when choosing a rabbit.
    2. Discuss suitable housing for a pet rabbit.
    3. Define a healthy diet for an adult working buck and investigate why caution is necessary when feeding fresh plants to your rabbits.
    4. Describe the correct way to handle a rabbit.
    5. Identify some common ailments a rabbit might suffer from.
  6. Reptiles and Amphibians.
    1. Explain the distinguishing characteristics of reptiles and amphibians.
    2. Describe how you would house reptiles or amphibians.
    3. Discuss how you would generally care for reptiles/amphibians.
    4. Evaluate feeding routines.
  7. Guinea Pigs, Hamsters and Mice.
    1. Describe suitable housing for a guinea pig.
    2. Evaluate what temperature guinea pigs should be kept at and discuss what happens if the temperature drops.
    3. Analyse what food should you never feed to a guinea pig and explain why.
    4. Explain what can happen if a female hamster with a litter is disturbed and how can this be avoided.

 

This course is an online course. With online study you have access to your entire course from the start of your studies. You can access your course materials, and submit all of your question papers to your personal tutor, online from anywhere in the World using your unique student account.

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.

We impose no time limits or pressures on you to complete your course material. Your course will not expire, and it will not become invalid until you have successfully completed it. All that we ask, is that you inform the College if you are intending to take a break from studying for a period of 6 months or more.

Depending on the course you study, each lesson should take you between 3 - 6 hours of study. Please note: This is only an approximate figure and is dependent upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
