Program Description

Stress is modern man's constant enemy. It strikes when least expected, but with proper self-awareness and management techniques it can be controlled.

In this course we deal with physical problems related to stress, how to achieve easy living, dealing with drugs, developing self-esteem, relaxation, diet and more.

    1. Examine stress, indicating how it affects human functioning
    2. Summarise the following terms:
    3. Healthy tension or stress
    4. Burnout List five different ways a person can react to stress
  2. The Stress Response.
    1. Discuss a typical approach to stress and introduce various bodily reactions
    2. Introduce your understanding of the 'fight or flight' reaction
    3. Identify three physical forms of stress
    4. Examine the functions of the Hypothalamus
  3. Assessing Stress Levels.
    1. Examine the symptoms of stress
    2. Introduce physical response to stress and show the symptoms that occur
    3. Discuss behavioural signs of stress and include examples
  4. Understanding the Coping process.
    1. Introduce and explain the coping process
    2. Describe the method you would use to do an assessment of a coping response
    3. List five maladaptive reactions to stress and show why these reactions are likely to fail
  5. Managing Stress – Skills and Techniques.
    1. Discuss different skills and techniques for managing stress
    2. List two stages of effective management of stress
    3. Discuss five effective techniques that can be used in an individual's stress management plan
    4. Identify three ways of reducing stress
  6. Relaxation and Stress.
    1. Evaluate the various techniques used for muscle relaxation
    2. Explain how you would perform an Autogenic Relaxation exercise
    3. Analyse the advantages of breathing techniques
  7. The Value of Nutrition, Exercise and Sleep in Coping with Stress.
    1. Introduce nutrition, exercise and sleep showing the role they play in coping with stress
    2. Examine carbohydrates showing their importance to the body
    3. Describe three main functions of protein
    4. Summarise three benefits of exercise on the body
  8. Developing Self-Esteem.
    1. Examine and compare self-concept and self-esteem
    2. Describe the difference between self-concept and self-esteem
    3. Discuss how the following influence a person's self-concept:
    4. As seen by others
    5. The ideal self as I see myself
    6. Success experiences

This course is an online course. With online study you have access to your entire course from the start of your studies. You can access your course materials, and submit all of your question papers to your personal tutor, online from anywhere in the World using your unique student account.

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.

We impose no time limits or pressures on you to complete your course material. Your course will not expire, and it will not become invalid until you have successfully completed it. All that we ask, is that you inform the College if you are intending to take a break from studying for a period of 6 months or more.

Depending on the course you study, each lesson should take you between 3 - 6 hours of study. Please note: This is only an approximate figure and is dependent upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
