Course Overview:

In this course, you will learn the fundamental concepts necessary to complete the GED®Exam. Each exam comprises of materials within the subjects of mathematics, basic English, statistics and reasoning, science, social studies, and other related subjects. Additionally, the textbook offers skills and helpful suggestions to provide participants the ability to complete the exam successfully. As students work through the course, it is recommended to complete the exercises provided within each chapter of the core sections of the GED® exam. Doing so will provide ideas and a glimpse as to what may be on an actual GED® Exam.

Students will:

• Gain an understanding of how the GED® Exam works and how best to prepare for all parts of the exam
• Complete pretests for each of the core subject areas of the GED Exam to determine their areas of strength and opportunity
• Review core concepts of basic English and language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies
• Complete posttests to fully prepare prior to registering and taking the GED Exam in person

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Introducing the GED® Test

Lesson 1 will serve as an introductory lesson to the GED® Exam and the fundamental components that make up the testing sessions. Included in this section of the course are informed as to how to register for the exam, an overview of each of the core sections one receives questions in, test day strategies, and one-month study plans. Participants of the course should carefully review this section prior to moving on to the pretests in the next set of lessons.

Lesson 2: Pretest Planning & Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) Pretest

Lesson 2 serves as the first of four (4) pretest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. Specifically in this section includes instructions on how to use the pretests and how much time to dedicate to the Reasoning Through Language Arts pretest and others that follow. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about. An evaluation chart provided once the test is completed in the text provides guidance as to what to focus on within the latter part of the textbook.

Lesson 3: Mathematical Reasoning Pretest

Lesson 3 will serve as the second of four (4) pretest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. The pretest provided include questions which participants may or may not be able to use a calculator.  Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about. An evaluation chart provided once the test is completed in the text provides guidance as to what to focus on within the latter part of the textbook.

Lesson 4: Science Pretest

Lesson 4 will serve as the third of four (4) pretest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. The pretest presented in this lesson focuses on different topics that may be provided to participants when it relates to various types of science. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about.

Lesson 5: Social Studies Pretest

Lesson 5 will serve as the final of four (4) pretest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. In this section, one will get an understanding of various civil and social study topics that they may see on an actual exam. This includes American and world history, economics, and other like topics. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about.

Lesson 6: Reasoning Through Language Arts - Part 1

Lesson 6 begins a two (2) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) portion of the  GED® Exam. Within this section, the focus is on basic English usage, reading comprehension, structure, Author's choices, literary and information texts, as well as extended responses that test-takers are required to do as part of the exam. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned. Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is at the end of the Lesson 7 reading assignment).

Lesson 7: Reasoning Through Language Arts - Part 2

Lesson 7 concludes the two (2) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) portion of the  GED® Exam. Within this section, the focus is on literary and information texts as well as extended responses that test-takers are required to do as part of the exam. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned. Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed.

Lesson 8: Mathematical Reasoning - Part 1

Lesson 8 begins a four (4) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Mathematical Reasoning portion of the  GED® Exam. Within this section, participants will learn about basic mathematical concepts. Topics covered include whole numbers, exponents, decimal numbers, and operations. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is at the end of the Lesson 11 reading assignment).

Lesson 9: Mathematical Reasoning - Part 2

Lesson 9 continues the four (4) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Mathematical Reasoning portion of the  GED® Exam. This section focuses on how numbers can be interpreted in different ways once divided or multiplied. Topics covered include fractions, ratios, rates, proportions, and percentages. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is at the end of the Lesson 11 reading assignment).

Lesson 10: Mathematical Reasoning - Part 3

Lesson 10 continues the four (4) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Mathematical Reasoning portion of the  GED® Exam. This section focuses on how to interpret numbers and or analyze data provided. Topics covered include the number line and negative numbers, probability, counting, statistics, and data analysis. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned. Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is at the end of the Lesson 11 reading assignment).

Lesson 11: Mathematical Reasoning - Part 4

Lesson 11 concludes the four (4) part lesson section of the course focuses on the Mathematical Reasoning portion of the  GED® Exam. This section focuses on how to interpret numbers and or analyze data provided. Topics covered include algebraic expressions, solving expressions, and inequalities, graphic equations, functions, and geometry. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned. Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed. These are located in the last pages of this reading assignment.

Lesson 12: Science - Part 1

Lesson 12 begins a three (3) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Science portion of the  GED® Exam. The science section of the exam is split into three (3) main categories: life sciences, physical sciences, and earth & space science. This lesson specifically focuses on questions that are may appear in the life sciences category. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is provided at the end of the Lesson 14 reading assignment).

Lesson 13: Science - Part 2

Lesson 13 continues a three (3) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Science portion of the  GED® Exam. The science section of the exam is split into three (3) main categories: life sciences, physical sciences, and earth & space science. This lesson specifically focuses on questions that are may appear in the physical sciences category. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed (which is provided at the end of the Lesson 14 reading assignment).

Lesson 14: Science - Part 3

Lesson 14 concludes the three (3) part lesson section of the course focusing on the Science portion of the  GED® Exam. The science section of the exam is split into three (3) main categories: life sciences, physical sciences, and earth & space science. This lesson specifically focuses on questions that are may appear in the earth and space sciences category. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed.

Lesson 15: Social Studies

Lesson 15 concludes the four (4) main categories that persons taking the GED® Exam would need to complete. Within the Social Studies portion of the exam, one will see questions focused on civics and government, United States history, economics, geography, and the world, and focusing themes. Practice questions are located at the end of each chapter assigned.  Answers for these questions are at the end of the assigned reading. Do not look at the answers until after the practice questions have been completed.

Lesson 16: Pretest Planning & Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) Pretest

Lesson 16 serves as the first of four (4) posttest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. Specifically in this section includes instructions on how to use the pretests and how much time to dedicate to the Reasoning Through Language Arts pretest and others that follow. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about. An evaluation chart provided once the test is completed in the text provides guidance as to what to focus on within the latter part of the textbook.

Lesson 17: Mathematical Reasoning Posttest

Lesson 17 will serve as the second of four (4) posttest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. The pretest provided include questions which participants may or may not be able to use a calculator.  Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about. An evaluation chart provided once the test is completed in the text provides guidance as to what to focus on within the latter part of the textbook.

Lesson 18: Science Posttest

Lesson 18 will serve as the third of four (4) pretest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. The pretest presented in this lesson focuses on different topics that may be provided to participants when it relates to various types of science. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about.

Lesson 19: Social Studies Posttest

Lesson 19 will serve as the final of four (4) posttest sections that are included in the GED® Exam preparation textbook. In this section, one will get an understanding of various civil and social study topics that they may see on an actual exam. This includes American and world history, economics, and other like topics. Participants of the course should allow sufficient time to complete the pretest(s) in this lesson as well as time to review the results that come about.
